The story follows the journey of 18-year-old Beth Bledsoe, who leaves her home in Creekville, South Carolina to pursue her studies in New York City. Beth’s closest relative is her uncle Frank Bledsoe, a refined and thoughtful college professor. While attending a party at Frank’s apartment with her boyfriend Bruce, Beth uncovers his secret: he has been living with his partner Walid (‘Wally’) for over ten years. After rejecting Bruce’s advances on him and taking care of a drunk Beth, Frank pleads with her to keep his sexuality hidden from the rest of their family – an agreement that she willingly makes.
The following day, Beth’s grandfather, Daddy Mac, passes away from a sudden heart attack. Although Frank agrees to drive her back to South Carolina for the funeral, Wally expresses interest in joining them to meet Frank’s family. However, Frank is not yet ready to reveal their true relationship and declines Wally’s offer. Despite this, Wally decides to rent a car and follow them partway. When Frank discovers him, he reluctantly allows Wally to join them but insists that he stay at a motel during the funeral out of fear for their safety if their relationship were known. As they make their way, Frank is plagued by memories from his teenage years and turns to drinking in secret as a coping mechanism. He asks Beth not to disclose his relapse to Wally, as he is a recovering alcoholic.
