Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) is an action-packed horror movie directed by Patrick Tatopoulos. It was written by Danny McBride, Dirk Blackman, and Howard McCain based on a story by Len Wiseman, Robert Orr, and McBride. The plot revolves around Lucian who is both the first werewolf to take human form and the first to be called a Lycan. Raised by Viktor – a vampire elder – Lucian is seen as the key to creating a race of Lycan slaves for the vampires to use as protectors during the day and laborers at night. As they struggle to survive against William’s savage werewolves, human nobles turn to Viktor for protection in exchange for tributes of silver that help him keep his slaves under control. As Lucian grows up, he falls in love with Viktor’s daughter Sonja and their relationship becomes intimate and secretive. However, Sonja’s recklessness and insubordination puts them both in danger one night when Lucian manages to escape his shackles and saves her from his werewolf brethren.

Despite acknowledging that Lucian rescued his daughter, Viktor cannot forgive the escape and has him punished and imprisoned. To secure Lucian’s release, Sonja enlists the help of Andreas Tanis by trading her seat on the vampire council. Together, they orchestrate Lucian’s liberation while also freeing the other Lycans. Sonja decides to remain behind, planning to meet with Lucian in three days. As she prepares to depart, her father comes to visit her. Viktor questions her involvement in Lucian’s escape; though she denies it, he is able to see the truth by biting her neck and reading her memories through her blood. Upon discovering their relationship, he locks her away as punishment. Meanwhile, Lucian gathers human slaves and werewolves to build a powerful force against the vampires.
