My Big Night (2015) is an Spanish comedy film, directed and co-written by Álex de la Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría respectively. The story follows José, an extra hired by an employment agency four months in advance, for a New Year’s Eve television special being filmed in an industrial pavilion outside Madrid. This leaves his mother Dolores, who is attached to a large crucifix she took from her husband’s grave, alone at home. José has been brought in to replace another extra who passed away due to an accident with a production crane during rehearsals. He finds himself among hundreds of other extras who are locked in the set, repeatedly going through the same rehearsals, clapping for performances they cannot see and celebrating the false arrival of the new year.
During dinner, José becomes smitten with Paloma, another jinxed woman seated at his table along with fellow extras Antonio, Yanire, and Josua. Backstage, tensions are rising as egos clash. Veteran crooner Alphonso and young Latin pop sensation Adanne face off, with Alphonso determined to maintain his position at the top. Things become even more complicated when Yuri, Alphonso’s supposed adopted son and target of his cruelty, hires assassin Óscar to eliminate him. Meanwhile, a supposed fan has obtained a vial containing Adanne’s semen in an attempt to blackmail him. In addition, the show’s co-hosts Roberto and Cristina, who also happen to be a dysfunctional couple, constantly fight for the favor of producer Benítez. It is no secret that the channel is struggling to avoid closure.
