Director Roland Emmerich released Universal Soldier (1992), a military science-fiction action film set during the end of the Vietnam War. After receiving orders to secure a village, American soldier Luc Deveraux discovers that his squad and some villagers have been killed by his mentally unstable comrade Sgt. Andrew Scott. Scott has also taken two children hostage, prompting Deveraux to try and persuade him that the war is over. However, Scott becomes enraged and kills one of the children in front of Deveraux, then demands that he kill the other as a show of loyalty. Deveraux refuses and stops Scott from harming the child. In a final confrontation, both soldiers end up fatally injured. The next day, their bodies are found by a U.S. Special Forces squad who are ordered to keep quiet about what really happened and to handle the bodies discreetly.
Fast forward to 1992, terrorists have seized control of the Hoover Dam. Civilians and police officers lie lifeless on the roadway, likely victims of a violent confrontation with the attackers. Some civilians are being held captive, and one has already been killed as the terrorists demand their demands be met. Authorities have strictly instructed police not to intervene or attempt to save the hostages. Instead, they call upon the elite UniSols (Universal Soldiers) team, which includes Deveraux (now known as GR44) and Scott (known as GR13). The two soldiers have been revived and lack any recollection of their past lives. However, Deveraux experiences flashbacks that include an unpublished encounter with a Vietnamese bar girl at a place called ‘LUCKY’S’.
