Unsane (2018)

Unsane (2018), an American psychological horror film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, tells the story of Sawyer Valentini. After relocating from her home in Boston to escape a stalker, she continues to struggle with the traumatic experience, evidenced by a brief reaction during a date. Seeking support, she meets with a counselor at Highland Creek Behavioral Center, unknowingly signing a voluntary admission form for the locked psychiatric hospital. Despite her attempts to seek help from the police, they are unable to intervene due to the signed consent form. As her stress levels increase, Sawyer turns to physical altercations with both a patient and staff member. Consequently, the resident psychiatrist recommends that she stay for an additional seven days. Another patient named Nate Hoffman reveals that Highland Creek has been taking advantage of health insurance claims for profit. They lure individuals into voluntarily committing themselves under false pretenses and continue to bill their insurance until it runs out before releasing them as ‘cured’.
One day, Sawyer spots her stalker, David Strine, masquerading as an orderly by the name of George Shaw. Nate has a hidden cell phone which Sawyer uses to contact her mother, Angela, who tries to help her escape. Sawyer confides in her mother about being stalked and reveals that David is at the hospital. Deliberately, David administers a large dose of methylphenidate to Sawyer, making it seem like she is mentally unstable. Later on, he poses as a hotel employee and tricks Angela into trusting him before killing her. Feeling threatened by Sawyer and Nate joining forces, David knocks Nate out and secretly tortures him with a defibrillator before fatally overdosing him on fentanyl. While searching for clues, Sawyer discovers Nate’s phone under her pillow with disturbing images showing his severe injuries. She reports this to the staff, but they dismiss her concerns and place her in solitary confinement.
