Untraceable (2008) is an American psychological thriller film directed by Gregory Hoblit. Its protagonist, FBI Special Agent Jennifer Marsh, is a widowed single parent residing in a suburban Portland home with her daughter, Annie Haskins, and her mother, Stella Marsh. By night, Jennifer works alongside her colleague Griffin Dowd in the FBI’s cybercrime division, tackling cases of identity theft and other similar crimes. One particular night, they receive an anonymous tip leading them to a troubling website called KillWithMe.com. This site features disturbing live videos of animal cruelty and can’t be taken down because its creator had anticipated such attempts and built in a backup server. As the website’s notoriety grows after the death of a cat, the webmaster escalates their actions to include human victims, trapping them in deadly scenarios that are activated by the number of views on the site.

The initial victim, helicopter pilot Herbert Miller, tragically lost his life due to anticoagulant injections. Shortly after, newscaster David Williams suffered a similarly cruel fate as he was burnt alive by heat lamps while being cemented into the floor. Despite authorities urging the public to steer clear of the dangerous website, Jennifer’s fears were confirmed when its popularity only grew. Griffin’s instincts led him to uncover a possible lead on the killer’s identity, but this ultimately resulted in him being taken hostage. The killer even deceitfully disguised his voice and pretended to be one of Griffin’s rejected blind dates during a phone call. Though mortally wounded and left alone in the room, Griffin managed to use morse code to send a message to the FBI about the crucial lead he had been pursuing.
