Up (2009)
Up (2009) is a well-loved American animated comedy-drama adventure film from Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures. Young Carl Fredricksen greatly admires famous explorer Charles Muntz, who was discredited after his discovery of a supposed giant bird skeleton from Paradise Falls in South America was deemed fraudulent. Despite this setback, Muntz remains determined to find a living specimen at the Falls and returns there soon after. ‘clubhouse’ (an abandoned home in their neighborhood) to a cliff near Paradise Falls. Eventually, Carl and Ellie get married and settle into the clubhouse, where they both work at the city zoo – Carl as a balloon salesman and Ellie as a tour guide. Tragically, they suffer a miscarriage which leads them to save up for a trip to Paradise Falls. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, they are repeatedly forced to use their savings for more immediate needs.
Years later, Carl plans a surprise trip to Paradise Falls for Ellie. Unfortunately, she falls ill and has to be hospitalized. Before she passes away, Ellie gifts him her cherished scrapbook. Now in his late 70s, Carl remains in his home as the neighborhood undergoes construction and redevelopment. Due to an incident where he accidentally injures a worker, the court deems him a danger to the public and orders him to move to assisted living. Refusing to give up on his promise to Ellie, Carl uses thousands of balloons to lift his house and fly towards Paradise Falls. Russell, a young ‘Wilderness Explorer’ scout working towards his final merit badge by assisting the elderly, unexpectedly tags along on the journey as an accidental stowaway. Just as Carl is about to send Russell back home, a storm propels their house all the way to South America.
