Valkyrie (2008)

Valkyrie (2008), a thriller directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, features Tom Cruise. Set during World War II, the film follows Wehrmacht Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in Tunisia as he becomes increasingly disillusioned with Hitler’s regime. After his battalion is attacked by P-40 fighter-bombers, Stauffenberg is gravely injured and returned to Germany for treatment. However, he ultimately loses his left eye, right hand, and two fingers on his left hand. In the midst of this turmoil, Hitler visits his military headquarters on the Eastern Front. There, General Henning von Tresckow plots to assassinate him by sneaking a timebomb disguised in a bottle of Cointreau onto his plane. Despite their efforts, the bomb fails to detonate and Hitler’s flight lands safely in Berlin. Shortly after this failed attempt, the Gestapo arrests resistance member General Hans Oster.
General Friedrich Olbricht enlists Stauffenberg to join the German Resistance, joining forces with Tresckow, General Ludwig Beck, Dr. Carl Goerdeler, and Field Marshal Erwin von Witzleben. Stauffenberg’s idea is to utilize Operation Valkyrie – a plan involving the Reserve Army in times of crisis – as a means to seize control of the nation. The group makes revisions to ensure that the Nazi regime will be dismantled following Hitler’s assassination. With his new rank in the Reserve Army, Stauffenberg gains direct access to Hitler, who gives his approval without thoroughly reviewing the changes. It becomes clear that only General Friedrich Fromm, leader of the Reserve Army, can activate Valkyrie. In order to entice Fromm’s cooperation, they offer him a high ranking position in the Wehrmacht after the uprising; however, Fromm declines to take on a direct role though he agrees to remain silent about their plans.
