In the action horror film Van Helsing (2004), written and directed by Stephen Sommers, we are taken to 1887 Transylvania. There, Doctor Victor Frankenstein works with his assistant Igor and Count Dracula in creating a monster. However, when Frankenstein refuses to follow Dracula’s plans for the creature, he is killed by the vampire. Meanwhile, Igor stands by and watches without emotion. As a mob approaches the castle, the monster escapes to a windmill with Frankenstein’s body. The windmill is set on fire by the angry mob, seemingly killing the monster. One year later, Gabriel Van Helsing, a renowned monster hunter who represents the Knights of the Holy Order protecting humanity for centuries, travels to Notre-Dame de Paris where he engages in a fight with Mr. Hyde and ultimately vanquishes Dr. Jekyll.

Van Helsing, who has no recollection of his past and was discovered barely alive on the steps of a church, is determined to seek forgiveness for his unknown wrongdoings and recover his lost memories. At the headquarters of the Order in Vatican City, he is assigned the mission of travelling to Transylvania to eliminate Dracula and protect Anna and Velkan Valerious, the last remaining members of an ancient Romanian bloodline. According to their ancestor’s pledge, it was prophesied that one of his descendants would defeat Dracula or face eternal damnation. While in Transylvania, Anna and Velkan try to defeat a werewolf under Dracula’s control but during the intense battle, Velkan falls into a deep river gorge with the creature and is bitten by it as he shoots it with a silver bullet.
