The American science fiction psychological thriller film, Vanilla Sky (2001), was both directed and written by Cameron Crowe. It is a remake of the Spanish film Open Your Eyes, released in 1997 by Alejandro Amenábar. The movie centers around David Aames, who inherited his father’s successful publishing company. After being imprisoned, David shares his life story with Dr. Curtis McCabe, a court psychologist, while wearing a prosthetic mask. Through flashbacks, we see how David passed off the responsibilities of his company to his father’s colleagues and lived a carefree lifestyle in New York City. During a party, David meets Sofia Serrano through his best friend Brian Shelby and they quickly fall in love. However, this love triangle is complicated when Julie Gianni, David’s current lover, follows them back to Sofia’s apartment.
In a fit of jealousy, Julie crashes her car with herself and David inside it – resulting in her death and severe disfigurement for David. Due to the limitations of plastic surgery, David resorts to wearing a prosthetic mask for his damaged face. The emotional and physical trauma from the accident causes him to withdraw and suffer from depression. While out with Brian and Sofia at a club, David’s drunken argument prompts them all to leave. In the heat of the moment, David insults his friends before they part ways, and he eventually passes out on the street. The following day, Sofia returns to apologize and takes David home. As they grow closer, David starts to heal from his experiences. Miraculously, surgeons are able to repair his face despite previous doubts.
