Velvet Goldmine (1998), a musical drama film written and directed by Todd Haynes from a story by Haynes and James Lyons, follows British journalist Arthur Stuart as he delves into the mysterious withdrawal of 1970s glam rock icon Brian Slade. Stuart interviews those involved in Slade’s career, each recalling their experiences which become a vignette for that particular segment of Slade’s life. Along with exploring the vibrant rock shows, fashion, and journalism of 1970s Britain, the film also touches on Stuart’s struggle with his own sexuality and how the boldness of the gay and bisexual glam rock scene inspired him to come out. Both youth culture and gay culture are highlighted through these elements.
At the outset of his career, Slade is wedded to Mandy. Upon arriving in America, he seeks out fellow rock star Curt Wild and they intertwine their lives together. Throughout the various scenes, Wild and Slade become increasingly troublesome to collaborate with as their fame rises. This ultimately leads to deteriorating relationships in both their personal and professional spheres. Sadly, Slade’s trajectory comes to an end after his staged murder during a performance receives severe criticism from critics and fans alike. As Stuart inches closer to uncovering Slade’s current whereabouts, his editor abruptly informs him that the story is no longer relevant to the public eye. Instead, Stuart is tasked with covering Tommy Stone’s tour – coincidentally now known as Brian Slade.
