Vengeance (2022)
Vengeance (2022) is an American black comedy mystery film, marking the directorial debut of B.J. Novak. The story follows New York City journalist Ben Manalowitz, who receives a call from Ty Shaw, a stranger claiming that his former fling, Abby Shaw, has passed away from a possible overdose. Persuaded by Ty, Ben travels to West Texas for Abby’s funeral. There he meets her family, including Ty and their mother Sharon, sisters Paris and Kansas City, younger brother Mason (also known as “El Stupido”), and Granny Carole. Ty then reveals his belief that Abby was actually murdered, asserting that she never used drugs. He enlists Ben’s help in uncovering the truth and seeking vengeance.
After discussing with his podcast producer Eloise, Ben decides to assist them as part of a story he will produce on grief and denial. Later, Ben meets with Ty and Ty’s friend Crawl, who shares that parties often occur at the oil fields. Crawl also mentions an area close to the fields known as “the Afterparty”, where there have been reports of dead bodies over time due to being outside law enforcement jurisdictions. Both Crawl and Ty suspect Sancholo, a local drug dealer. As Ben continues his investigation, he encounters Quentin Sellers, a peculiar record producer who is also an outsider like himself. Despite being college-educated, Quentin has made Texas his home. He provides Ben with a memory stick containing recordings of Abby singing. In order to get more information about Abby’s death, Ben confronts Sancholo and learns that he was actually in Tulsa at the time.
