Veronica Guerin (2003)
The biographical crime film, Veronica Guerin (2003), directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Cate Blanchett in the titular role, focuses on the intrusion of the illegal drug trade into the lives of working class individuals and their children. Determined to uncover those responsible, Guerin conducts interviews with young addicts who shoot up in public or empty buildings within their housing communities. Through her investigation, she uncovers key suppliers and meets John Traynor, a man with insider knowledge of the criminal world. While he agrees to assist her to a certain extent, he also deceives her in order to protect himself from notorious drug lord John Gilligan. As Traynor leads her away from Gilligan’s operation, he suggests that Gerry Hutch, known as The Monk, is actually in charge.
As Guerin edges closer to the truth, both she and her loved ones become targets. Despite a bullet being fired through her home’s window as a warning, she persists. However, her determination is met with opposition as she is shot in the leg and even her young son Cathal is threatened. Despite pleas from her husband Graham, mother Bernie, and brother Jimmy to back down, Guerin decides to confront Gilligan at his residence. Despite being brutally attacked, this only fuels her determination to expose him. Instead of pressing charges, which would require her to be removed from the story, Guerin continues with the investigation unfazed.
