Vice (2018)
Vice (2018) is an American biographical political satire comedy-drama film that follows the career of Dick Cheney. Directed, written and produced by Adam McKay, the film is narrated by Kurt, a fictional veteran of the Afghan and Iraqi wars. In 1963, after dropping out of Yale University due to his struggles with alcoholism, Cheney works as a lineman in Wyoming. However, after being pulled over for driving while intoxicated, his wife Lynne gives him an ultimatum to get his life together or she will leave him. Six years later in 1969, Cheney lands a job as a White House intern during the Nixon Administration where he learns from Donald Rumsfeld, the President’s economic adviser. As he balances his career with his family life and raising two daughters, Liz and Mary, Cheney witnesses the true power of the executive branch when he overhears Henry Kissinger discussing the secret bombing of Cambodia with Nixon. Eventually, after Nixon’s resignation and Rumsfeld’s abrasive attitude leading to their distancing from him, Cheney rises to become White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford while Rumsfeld becomes Secretary of Defense.
The media dubs the sudden shake-up in the cabinet as the Halloween Massacre, which occurs during Cheney’s tenure. Under his leadership, a young Antonin Scalia introduces Cheney to the unitary executive theory. After Ford loses reelection, Cheney successfully runs for Congress in Wyoming. Amidst his campaign, he suffers his first heart attack, leaving him to recover while Lynne advocates on his behalf. Her efforts lead to Cheney’s victory in securing a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. During the Reagan Administration, Cheney is a strong advocate for conservative and pro-business policies, particularly favoring the fossil fuel industries. He also supports abolishing the FCC fairness doctrine, which contributes to the rise of conservative media outlets such as Fox News and talk radio, ultimately fueling increasing levels of partisan division within the United States.
