Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), a rom-com written and directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of two friends as they spend their summer in Barcelona. They stay with Vicky’s relatives, Judy and Mark. While Vicky and Cristina are close, they have different outlooks on love. Vicky is more traditional and practical, engaged to her dependable fiancé Doug. Cristina, on the other hand, sees herself as a free-spirited nonconformist who is unsure of what she wants from life or love. While visiting an art exhibition, Cristina is captivated by the artist Juan Antonio, whom Judy reveals had a tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife. Afterward, he boldly invites Vicky and Cristina to join him for a weekend in Oviedo on his private plane for some exploring, fine dining, and potentially even more intimate activities. Cristina eagerly accepts the invitation while Vicky initially hesitates but ultimately agrees to go along to keep an eye on her friend.
At the end of their first day together, Vicky declines Juan Antonio’s invitation to his hotel room due to her commitment to Doug. However, Cristina eagerly accepts and they make plans to spend the evening together. Unfortunately, just before they are about to meet up, Cristina becomes ill with food poisoning and is confined to bed. While waiting for her to recover, Vicky and Juan Antonio spend the weekend alone together. Throughout their time together, Vicky starts to see Juan Antonio in a different light as he opens up about his turbulent past with his ex-wife, María Elena. She joins him on a visit to his father who is a respected poet and later in the evening, she is moved by a beautiful Spanish guitar performance. As they take a walk through a dark grove of trees, Vicky finally gives into Juan Antonio’s affections. The following day, with Cristina feeling better, the three of them return to Barcelona.
