Victory (1981), a film directed by John Huston, follows a group of Allied POWs as they agree to participate in a football match against a German team. Led by English Captain John Colby, who played professionally for West Ham United before the war, the prisoners soon realize they are being used for German propaganda. As their captain and de facto manager, Colby handpicks his team members. However, Robert Hatch, an American serving with the Canadian Army, is initially left out but eventually convinces Colby to bring him on as the team’s trainer in order to facilitate his escape plans.

Despite his superiors’ repeated attempts to persuade him, Colby consistently refuses to use the match as a chance to escape. He fears it will put his players in danger. However, Hatch has been working on his own escape plan and ultimately manages to flee the prison camp. In exchange for help from Colby’s superiors, he agrees to go to Paris and seek assistance from the French Resistance. After successfully finding them in Paris, the Resistance initially deems an escape too risky. However, upon learning that the match will take place at the Colombes Stadium, they devise a plan using a tunnel from the sewer system to the showers in the changing room for the players’ escape route.
