Vidocq (2001)
Vidocq (2001) is a mystery film, directed by Pitof. Set in 1830 Paris, the story follows private investigator Eugène Vidocq as he pursues a mysterious figure donning a cowl and mirrored mask. Their encounter leads Vidocq to a glass factory where they engage in a brutal fight that ultimately ends with Vidocq dangling from the ledge of a furnace room. In a desperate attempt to uncover his attacker’s identity, Vidocq begs him to reveal his face before succumbing to his fiery fate. Learning of Vidocq’s death, journalist Étienne Boisset seeks out his colleague René Nimier for information on his past to write his biography. Boisset also vows to seek justice for Vidocq’s murder. Nimier discloses that Lautrennes, Paris’ chief of police, had commissioned them to investigate the deaths of Belmont and Veraldi, owners of a cannon factory.
Lautrennes suspects foul play and believes it may be linked to attempts at sabotaging the French military during an already volatile political climate. Following the unfortunate deaths of Belmont and Veraldi in a lightning strike, Vidocq and Nimier are conducting their investigation. During this process, they witness a factory worker’s clothes catching fire due to the presence of powder. Upon interrogating the worker responsible for maintaining the suits of the deceased men, they uncover that he had received a letter with cash instructing him not to clean their jackets. Further examination leads them to discover metallic pins, adorned with monkey heads, inserted into their hats which may have attracted the lightning. The situation prompts Lautrennes to assign Tauzet to look into Vidocq’s death. In the meantime, Boisset takes it upon himself to retrieve the monkey-head pins from Nimier’s office without his knowledge.
