Virtuosity (1995), an American sci-fi action flick helmed by Brett Leonard, follows Parker Barnes, an ex-cop imprisoned for taking the life of political terrorist Matthew Grimes. Grimes was responsible for the deaths of Parker’s wife and daughter. Despite also accidentally shooting two journalists during the altercation, Barnes received a severe sentence of 17 years to life. In 1999, Barnes and his colleague John Donovan are testing a virtual reality system designed to train police officers. While pursuing serial killer SID 6.7 in a simulated restaurant setting, Donovan falls into shock and dies at the hands of the program (nicknamed for its combination of history’s most brutal murderers). Upon witnessing this tragedy, project leader Dr. Darrel Lindenmeyer is instructed to terminate SID by Commissioner Elizabeth Deane and her assistant William Wallace.
After a confrontation with another inmate, Big Red, Barnes meets with Dr. Madison Carter, a criminal psychologist. At the same time, SID’s future at SID is uncertain after Donovan’s death due to SID disabling the fail-safes. In order to save their project and company, Lindenmeyer persuades co-worker Clyde Reilly to believe that their newest creation, Sheila 3.2, can be transformed into a real android body. However, things take a deadly turn when Lindenmeyer swaps the Sheila 3.2 module for the dangerous SID 6.7 module and Reilly is killed. With SID now unleashed in the real world, Deane and LAPD Chief William Cochran make Barnes an offer: he will be pardoned if he brings back SID and returns him to virtual reality.
