Volcano (1997)
Volcano (1997) is an American disaster film directed by Mick Jackson and written by Jerome Armstrong and Billy Ray. In downtown Los Angeles, an earthquake strikes, causing minor damage. Mike Roark, the new director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management, chooses to return to work and assist in the crisis despite being on vacation with his daughter Kelly. His colleague Emmit Reese informs him that seven utility workers were tragically killed in a storm drain at MacArthur Park. As a precaution, Mike decides to stop the subway lines near the earthquake site, but MTA Chairman Stan Olber disagrees, stating that there is no danger to the trains. Seismologist Dr. Amy Barnes suspects that a volcano may be forming underneath the city due to the fissure caused by the earthquake; however, she lacks sufficient evidence to convince Mike to take further action.
At the crack of dawn, Amy and her assistant Rachel venture into the storm sewer to investigate. While collecting samples, a more powerful earthquake hits the city. Tragically, Rachel falls into a crack and is killed by a rush of hot gases. The violent temblor causes a subway train to derail from falling debris, leading to a widespread power outage in the entire city. Subsequently, at the La Brea Tar Pits, the volcano erupts. Amid chaotic scenes, Mike helps injured firefighters out of harm’s way as lava begins to flow down Wilshire Boulevard. The destructive lava engulfs everything in its path, including an overturned fire truck where two firefighters lose their lives. As chaos ensues, Kelly is separated from her family when she sustains a leg injury from a flying lava bomb and is rushed to Cedars-Sinai Hospital alongside other patients.
