Vox Lux (2018), an American musical drama film, follows the story of a tragic incident in early January 2000. Cullen Active enters his school in Staten Island and shoots his teacher and classmates before taking his own life. Amidst the chaos, 13-year-old Celeste Montgomery calmly speaks to Cullen and offers to pray with him. Despite her efforts, the shooting results in multiple casualties and Celeste herself is injured. As she recovers, she turns to music for solace and begins writing songs with her older sister Eleanor. During an event honoring the victims, Celeste performs one of their original pieces titled ‘Wrapped Up’. The song receives instant acclaim and attracts the attention of a manager.
In 2017, a shooting on a Croatian beach, reportedly linked to Celeste’s music because of the similar masks worn by the perpetrators as seen in her ‘Hologram’ video from 2001. Now at 31 years old, Celeste is gearing up for the first performance of her tour for her latest album, Vox Lux. Her manager notifies her about the shooting and instructs her to prepare for upcoming press events. Before her initial interview, she takes her daughter Albertine (whom she conceived during an encounter with another musician) out to lunch. During the meal, Celeste’s erratic and destructive behavior fueled by alcohol results in them being asked to leave the restaurant by the manager. It is revealed that six years ago, Celeste sustained permanent damage to her left eye from excessive consumption of methanol while drinking household cleaning products.
