Waking Up in Reno (2002)
Jordan Brady’s film, Waking Up in Reno (2002), follows the journey of two couples, Lonnie Earl Dodd and his wife Darlene, and Roy and Candy Kirkendall. Lonnie is a car dealer from Little Rock who stars in his own humorous TV commercials. The four of them embark on a trip across the country to attend a monster truck rally. In preparation for the trip, Lonnie pulls out a new SUV from his car lot. Along the way, they make a stop at an Amarillo restaurant where Lonnie attempts to win a free dinner by consuming an enormous steak within an hour. While Darlene has always dreamt of seeing the Grand Canyon, her husband’s rigid schedule prevents them from making any detours. It becomes evident that Darlene has been living in her husband’s shadow and enduring his mistreatment without standing up for herself.
While in Reno, a fortune teller predicts to Candy that she is pregnant. To confirm this news, she purchases multiple at-home pregnancy tests. Her excitement grows as all the results come back positive. However, complications arise when Roy contacts Doc Tuley for the results of his recent fertility test. To his dismay, Roy learns that he is sterile and therefore not capable of fathering Candy’s child. Darlene notices an uneasy exchange between Lonnie Earl and Candy and realizes that they have been having an affair. Heartbroken, she decides to indulge in a costly makeover and attends a Tony Orlando performance, determined to not let her husband’s insensitivity ruin her dreams too. Meanwhile, Roy is in the hotel lounge attempting to pursue Brenda, unaware that she is actually a prostitute.
