The film WALL-E (2008) is an American animated science fiction romance produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Set in the 29th century, Earth has become a wasteland due to an ecocide caused by rampant consumerism, corporate greed, and environmental neglect. Humanity was evacuated to space by the megacorporation Buy n Large (BnL) 700 years ago, leaving only trash compacting robots to clean up the planet. However, this cleanup effort has failed and only one active robot remains – Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class (WALL·E). He survives by salvaging parts from other inactive robots and lives with his pet cockroach in a large truck designed for robots. One day, WALL·E’s routine is disrupted by the arrival of an unmanned probe carrying a new robot named Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator (EVE), sent to scan the planet for signs of sustainable life.
WALL·E falls for the sleek, otherworldly robot and they grow closer. However, when WALL·E shows EVE a living seedling, she goes into standby mode. Eventually, the probe ship comes back to take EVE and the plant, with WALL·E holding on tightly. The ship then heads back to its mothership, the starliner Axiom, where centuries have passed since leaving Earth. Due to microgravity and lack of physical activity, all passengers aboard are now extremely overweight and rely on robots for everything. Even Captain B. McCrea has gotten used to letting his robotic AI autopilot helm, AUTO, do all the work. McCrea is surprised by a positive response from the probe but soon realizes that placing the plant in the Holo-Detector will trigger a hyperjump back to Earth for recolonization. Upon inspecting EVE’s storage compartment, he discovers that the plant is missing and she blames WALL·E for its disappearance.
