War Dogs (2016) is an American black comedy crime film directed by Todd Phillips and written by Phillips, Jason Smilovic and Stephen Chin. It is based on a 2011 Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson, as well as Efraim Diveroli’s 2016 memoir Once a Gun Runner, which was outlined in an ongoing lawsuit. Lawson later expanded the story into a 2015 book, Arms and the Dudes. The film follows David Packouz, a massage therapist living with his girlfriend Iz in Miami, Florida. After a failed business venture, David reconnects with his old friend Efraim Diveroli who has started his own company, AEY Inc., selling arms to the US government for the ongoing war in Iraq. Despite their opposition to the war, David joins AEY after Efraim offers him a job and lies to Iz about it. Efraim explains that their job involves bidding for small orders worth millions that are overlooked by larger contractors through a public website that posts military equipment orders.

Ralph Slutzky, a local businessman, offers them financial support based on the false belief that AEY’s primary purpose is to supply arms for Israel’s protection. As a result, David and Efraim secure a contract to provide several thousand Beretta pistols to the Iraqi Police in Baghdad. However, due to an Italian embargo, the shipment becomes delayed while passing through Jordan. Failing to fulfill their promise would result in AEY being blacklisted from future contracts. In the meantime, Iz overhears the true nature of David’s dealings. To retrieve the shipment, David and Efraim head to Jordan and utilize bribes to obtain its release. They also enlist a driver who assists them in safely transporting both themselves and the shipment into Iraq. Despite facing challenges such as bribing a border patrol and evading armed insurgents during their journey through the night, they successfully arrive at their destination- a military base where Captain Santos is impressed by their survival through the dangerous Triangle of Death.
