War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) is an American sci-fi action film, directed by Matt Reeves and co-written with Mark Bomback. It depicts a full-on conflict between apes and humans, where Caesar embarks on a mission to seek justice for his fallen comrades. The story takes place two years after Koba, an aggressive bonobo, attacked human survivors in San Francisco. Now, Caesar and his tribe of intelligent apes are pitted against Alpha-Omega, a rebellious military group helmed by a merciless colonel. This faction also enlists other apes formerly loyal to Koba, mockingly referred to as ‘donkeys’. During one of their attacks on an ape outpost, four soldiers are taken prisoner, including Preacher and Red, a gorilla deemed a ‘donkey’.
Caesar shows mercy to the soldiers, hoping to sway the Colonel’s perception of the apes as savage. But Red takes advantage of the opportunity and escapes by causing harm to albino gorilla Winter. Upon returning from their long journey, Caesar’s eldest son Blue Eyes and lieutenant Rocket inform him about a perfect location they discovered across the desert for the apes. Winter, however, expresses discomfort and urges immediate relocation. Caesar disagrees and decides that preparations must be made first. That night, the Colonel and his men invade the apes’ home, resulting in the death of Blue Eyes and Caesar’s wife Cornelia; despite his efforts, Caesar is unable to stop the Colonel from getting away. Afterward, Winter remains missing as he is believed to have betrayed the apes due to fear.
