War Horse (2011)
War Horse (2011) is a drama film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis. It is adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s book of the same title and its stage version from 2007. In 1912, a bay Irish Hunter is born in Devon, England. At an auction, farmer Ted Narracott outbids his landlord Lyons for the colt Joey. His wife Rose is not pleased as they need a working horse for ploughing, not an Irish Hunter. Their son Albert and his friend Andrew name the colt Joey and bond with him. Against all odds, Joey helps plough a rocky field, saving their farm by growing turnips. Rose also shows Albert his father’s war medals from the Second Boer War and gives him his regimental pennant. She confides in him that his father carries both physical and mental scars from the war.
As war is declared against Germany in 1914, heavy rain destroys the crops of the family, causing Ted to sell Joey to the army. Despite Albert’s desperate attempts to prevent the sale, Captain James Nicholls recognizes Albert’s bond with the horse and offers to take care of him. However, Albert is unable to join the military due to his age. Before leaving, he ties a pennant to Joey’s bridle and promises to find him again. During their training for their role in the military, Joey becomes close with Topthorn, a black stallion. Together, they are deployed to Flanders as part of a flying column under Nicholls and Major Stewart’s command. In one fierce attack on a German camp, Nicholls and most of his men are killed by machine gun fire. The Germans then capture all of the horses.
