War Machine (2017)
War Machine (2017) is an American satirical war comedy film, written and directed by David Michôd. Assigned to bring a resolution to the conflict in Afghanistan, Four-star General Glen McMahon (a character based on General Stanley McChrystal) finds himself the target of attacks. With degrees from West Point and Yale, Glen comes from a military family and has excelled academically throughout his life. He is known as a maverick leader, beloved by his troops for never sending them where he wouldn’t go himself. Prior to his mission in Afghanistan, Glen led secret forces in Iraq and authored a book on leadership called ‘One Leg at a Time’. However, he believes that the Afghan war is not being won due to inadequate leadership.
Glen attempts to bring the leaders of the 43 nations under his command out of their cabins and into a shared space. This includes Colonel Cory Staggart, an Army Ranger who serves as General McMahon’s executive officer. Also present is Major General Greg Pulver, who holds the position of ISAF Director of Intelligence and shares a West Point background with Glen. Tech Sgt. Andy Moon, an information technology support assistant for Glen, has successfully fixed all technical issues. Lieutenant Commander Pete Duckman, a Navy SEAL and member of McMahon’s staff, remains somewhat mysterious in his role. Additionally, USN Rear Admiral Simon Ball serves as McMahon’s Senior Public Affairs Officer while Matt Little brings his experience as a former lobbyist to the table as McMahon’s civilian media adviser.
