War of the Worlds (2005), an American science fiction action-thriller, was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp. Based on H. G. Wells’ famous 1898 novel of the same name, the film opens with a narrator describing the threat of extraterrestrial beings who are envious of humanity’s dominance over Earth. The story follows Ray Ferrier, a divorced longshoreman working as a crane operator in Brooklyn, New York. He is estranged from his children – 10-year-old Rachel and teenage son Robbie – after his former wife Mary Ann drops them off at his house in Bayonne, New Jersey before heading to Boston, Massachusetts to visit her parents. As the plot unfolds, a strange thunderstorm strikes, causing an EMP that disables nearly all electronic devices after multiple lightning strikes into a nearby intersection.
On his way to investigate the impacts, Ray asks his mechanic friend Manny to repair a customer’s minivan by replacing the solenoid. As he arrives at the scene, a massive ‘tripod’ war machine emerges from the ground and begins attacking the crowd with energy weapons, turning most of them into ash. With his children in tow and Manny’s repaired van at their disposal, Ray attempts to persuade Manny to join them, but is ultimately forced to leave him behind as they try to escape another tripod attack. They eventually find refuge at Mary Ann’s abandoned suburban home in New Jersey. Later on, a Boeing 747 crashes into their neighborhood.
