War of the Worlds (2019–2024), a production of Fox Networks Group and StudioCanal-backed Urban Myth Films, is an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel about Earth’s response to a surprise invasion by Martians. The series, created and written by Howard Overman and directed by Gilles Coulier and Richard Clark, marks the third television adaptation of the novel. Set in modern-day France, this Anglo-French retelling takes inspiration from The Walking Dead as it follows groups of survivors who are forced to join forces after an apocalyptic attack from extraterrestrial beings.
Catherine Durand, an astronomer, investigates an intelligent signal from exoplanet Ross 128 b. Shortly after, a barrage of metallic spacecrafts strike all major inhabited areas on Earth. Emily, a blind teenager, hears odd pulsating noises while Bill, a scientist studying the brain, recognizes the magnetic waves in the pulses. He rushes to warn his son Dan and locate his ex-wife Helen. The intensity of the magnetic signal rises and quickly takes the lives of all humans not sheltered below ground, underwater or within metal enclosures. In London, Sarah Gresham along with her children Tom and Emily luckily find refuge in an underground tunnel during their drive. Meanwhile, in Paris, Jonathan Gresham’s cab submerges into the Seine at just the right moment. Kariem illegally enters England by hiding inside a metal container and finds himself alone in unfamiliar surroundings upon emerging. Catherine’s sister Sophia makes attempts to contact her at the observatory.
