War on Everyone (2016)
The British black comedy buddy cop film, War on Everyone (2016), was both written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. After being suspended for physically assaulting a coworker who held racist views, corrupt cops Terry Monroe and Bob Bolaño are back on the Albuquerque police force. The duo has a reputation for committing acts of assault, robbery, extortion, bribery, and drug use. While keeping an eye on petty criminals, Monroe and Bolaño come to the conclusion that local criminal Jimmy Harris is planning a heist. In order to obtain more information, they track down one of Harris’ former associates named Reggie and coerce him into talking by threatening to arrest him unjustly. Through Reggie and his friend Pádraic Power’s help, they learn that the getaway driver for the heist is Clifford Reynard and that Harris’ girlfriend Jackie Hollis used to work at a strip club owned by Russell Birdwell.
Although Birdwell seems suspicious of their intentions, he still reveals Hollis’ address. Without hesitation, Monroe and Bolaño burst into Harris’ home and knock him unconscious before extorting valuable possessions from him. As Birdwell relays news of the cops’ inquiries about Hollis to his boss, James Mangan, a knighted British businessman overseeing the heist, Mangan instructs him to intimidate both Hollis and the authorities. Monroe later surprises Hollis with a new television and their mutual attraction quickly escalates into a physical relationship. While keeping an eye on Reynard’s home for their own extortion scheme, they are suddenly interrupted by a scream. Inside, they discover that Reynard’s wife has killed him in a fit of hysteria, though she is unable to provide an explanation in her distressed state. Annoyed by the situation, the cops struggle to calm her down as they contemplate their next move. Despite their efforts, Reynard’s teenage son manages to escape without being caught.
