Watcher (2022)
Watcher (2022) is a psychological thriller film directed by Chloe Okuno and written by Zack Ford. The story follows American couple Julia and Francis, who move to Bucharest and settle into their new apartment with a large picture window. As Francis spends long hours at work, Julia becomes increasingly disturbed by a man in the building across the street who seems to constantly watch her. Her anxiety intensifies when she discovers that a serial killer, known as “the Spider” in the local media, is targeting young women in the area. During a day out in the city, Julia suspects that she is being followed by a man at a theater and supermarket. However, when they review security footage at the market, it provides no clear answers.
Julia becomes acquainted with her neighbor, Irina. While chatting, Irina reveals a firearm given to her by her boyfriend Cristian for protection. That evening, Julia exchanges waves with a man in the window and grows suspicious that it may be the same individual who had followed her. Concerned for her safety, she contacts the authorities. Upon their arrival, Francis accompanies an officer to the neighboring building to speak with the man, but later downplays Julia’s concerns. Later on, while out and about, Julia encounters the man working as a janitor at a strip club. Little does she know, Irina is employed there as a dancer and catches sight of Julia. Hoping for answers about the man’s identity, Julia questions Irina but comes up empty-handed. That night, screams ring out from Irina’s apartment and Julia takes action by persuading the landlady to unlock it, only to discover that Irina is nowhere to be found.
