Watership Down (1978)

Watership Down (1978) is a film based on Richard Adams’ novel, directed and written by Martin Rosen. According to Lapine language mythology, the god Frith created the world where all animals lived harmoniously as grass eaters. However, as the rabbit population grew, their hunger caused a food shortage. In response, Frith asked the rabbit prince El-Ahrairah to control his people, but he refused. As punishment, Frith granted other animals gifts to hunt rabbits. Satisfied that El-Ahrairah had learned his lesson, Frith bestowed upon rabbits the gifts of speed and cunning. In present times near Sandleford warren, Fiver has an ominous vision while Hazel and him come across a signboard stating a residential development is coming – although they cannot read it.
Fiver and Hazel plead with the chief rabbit to order an evacuation, but their request is denied. Instead, the chief instructs Captain Holly, the leader of the Owsla police force, to prevent any rabbits from leaving. Despite this obstacle, Fiver and Hazel successfully escape with six others: Bigwig, Blackberry, Pipkin, Dandelion, Silver, and Violet. The group navigates through dangerous situations in the woods until tragedy strikes – a hawk kills Violet, leaving her friends devastated. Eventually, they stumble upon a warren led by a rabbit named Cowslip. Here, they are provided with an abundance of vegetables by a nearby farmer. While grateful for the generosity, Fiver’s intuition tells him something is amiss and he chooses to leave. Bigwig follows suit but scolds Fiver for causing tension amongst the group. When Bigwig becomes trapped in a snare, his friends rush to his aid and Fiver comes to a startling realization – the farmer is providing food for Cowslip’s warren in order to lure rabbits into his traps as prey. With this knowledge in mind, the group resumes their journey together once more.
