We Are Who We Are (2020), co-created and directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a 2020 miniseries on HBO and Sky Atlantic. It’s a coming-of-age drama set on a fictional U.S. military base in Chioggia, Italy in 2016, focusing on two American teens. Through their experiences of friendship, first love and identity, the series captures the thrill and heartache of being a teenager. Fraser Wilson and his mothers, Colonel Sarah Wilson and Major Maggie Teixeira, arrive at the Venice Marco Polo Airport in Italy from New York City. They are greeted by their Nigerian neighbor, Jenny Poythress, who drives them to their new home on the U.S. Army Base ‘Caserma Maurizio Pialati’ near Chioggia. Once settled in, Fraser explores the base and high school before being spontaneously invited to the beach by a group of classmates led by Britney. During his time there, he meets Caitlin, Jenny’s daughter, who goes by Harper when dressed as a boy. Fascinated by her, Fraser later spots Harper at a restaurant and asks what name she prefers to be called by.
