We Bought a Zoo (2011)
We Bought a Zoo (2011) is a biographical family comedy-drama film loosely based on the 2008 memoir of the same name by Benjamin Mee, directed and co-written by Cameron Crowe. Following the loss of his wife Katherine seven months prior, Benjamin is struggling to cope with grief alongside his children, 14-year-old Dylan and 7-year-old Rosie. As Dylan is expelled from school, Benjamin realizes that their current living situation only serves as a constant reminder of Katherine’s absence and decides it’s time for a fresh start. After touring numerous homes with their realtor, Mr. Stevens, without success, Rosie spots a listing for an old house and insists on checking it out. Despite Mr. Stevens’ attempts to discourage them, Benjamin is immediately taken with the property upon seeing it and declares that ‘it’s perfect’.
According to Stevens, in order to acquire the house, they must also purchase the zoo on the property, which has been closed for several years. Upon seeing Rosie happily playing with the peacocks, Benjamin makes a firm decision to buy the zoo. Despite Dylan’s frustration about leaving his friends behind, he turns to his art as a coping mechanism. Even after being discouraged by his accountant brother Duncan, Benjamin goes ahead and buys the zoo. The zoo staff, led by head keeper Kelly Foster, immediately begins making renovations to reopen it to the public. When Kelly questions Benjamin about his lack of experience in managing a zoo, he simply responds with a nonchalant ‘Why not?’ Meanwhile, Dylan grows increasingly unhappy and misses his friends, causing him to withdraw further into his art.
