We Were Soldiers (2002)
The American war film We Were Soldiers (2002), written and directed by Randall Wallace and starring Mel Gibson, tells the story of a group of soldiers faced with an ambush from the Viet Minh during the First Indochina War in 1954. Eleven years later, in 1965, US Army Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore is tasked with training and leading a battalion during the Vietnam War. When their base is attacked, Moore’s 400 men are ordered to pursue and eliminate the North Vietnamese attackers, despite being unaware of their numbers according to intelligence reports. Upon landing in the Ia Drang Valley, they capture a North Vietnamese scout who reveals that their target is actually a base camp for a veteran division of 4,000 enemy troops.
After arriving in the area with a platoon of soldiers, 2nd Lt. Henry Herrick immediately spots an enemy scout and gives chase. Although his men are hesitant, he urges them to follow him. Unfortunately, the scout leads them into an ambush which results in the deaths of several soldiers, including Herrick and his subordinates. The surviving members of the platoon find themselves surrounded and cut off from the rest of their battalion. Fortunately, Sgt. Savage takes command and utilizes artillery and the cover of night to prevent the Vietnamese from overrunning their defensive position. Meanwhile, Moore secures weak points with units being constantly dropped off by helicopters before the North Vietnamese can exploit them.
