West Side Story (1961)
West Side Story (1961) is a film directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, based on the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Set in 1957 New York City, it revolves around two teenage gangs vying for power on the Upper West Side. The Jets, led by Riff, engage in fights with the Sharks, led by Bernardo. After a brawl is broken up by Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke, the Jets challenge the Sharks to a rumble following an upcoming dance. Riff wants his friend Tony, a former Jet member, to fight at the rumble. Despite initially declining Riff’s invitation to the dance due to a feeling that something important is about to happen, Tony eventually agrees to attend.
Meanwhile, Maria (Bernardo’s sister) excitedly discusses her plans for the dance with her best friend and Bernardo’s girlfriend Anita. At the dance itself, both gangs and their respective female counterparts refuse to mix with each other. Tony and Maria’s love was instantaneous. However, their passion was tested when Bernardo forbade Tony from being with her and sent her home. In an attempt to resolve the tension between the Jets and Sharks, Riff suggested a midnight meeting at Doc’s drug store. During the meeting, Anita expressed her belief that Bernardo was overly protective of Maria, leading to a debate about the pros and cons of Puerto Rico versus the US mainland.
