West Side Story (2021)
West Side Story (2021) is a an erican musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1957 stage musical of the same name. The story centers around two rival gangs, the Jets and Sharks, who battle for control of San Juan Hill in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. As tensions rise between the groups, NYPD Sergeant Krupke and Lieutenant Schrank intervene and remind them that their conflict is pointless as the neighborhood will soon be demolished for the Lincoln Center. Despite this warning, Jet leader Riff remains determined to settle things with a rumble and enlists his friend Tony’s help. However, Tony has been trying to turn over a new leaf with the support of Valentina, owner of Doc’s general store. Meanwhile, Bernardo’s sister María longs for independence despite being betrothed to his friend Chino. At a community center dance that evening, Tony and María meet and fall in love, causing further animosity from Bernardo who agrees to a rumble only if Tony attends.
Tony confesses his love to María and they arrange to meet again tomorrow on her fire escape. Meanwhile, Bernardo and his girlfriend Anita engage in a heated debate about their experiences in New York City versus Puerto Rico. Their opposing perspectives on the American Dream highlight their conflicting views. The Jets are questioned by the police about the upcoming rumble, but they deny any involvement. At the Cloisters, Tony opens up to María about his past and how his time in prison changed him for the better. Deeply moved, María asks Tony to promise her that he will put an end to the violence between rival gangs. As they declare their love for each other, Tony attempts to persuade Riff to cancel the rumble by taking his newly acquired gun, but the Jets quickly recover it. Despite Schrank’s efforts to prevent it, Krupke and the police are unable to stop the rumble from happening.
