What About Bob? (1991)
What About Bob? (1991) is an American comedy film directed by Frank Oz and starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. Bob Wiley, who suffers from multiple phobias, finds it challenging to leave his New York City apartment. Despite regular therapy, he makes minimal progress and constantly seeks assurance from his counselors. Frustrated by Bob’s constant demands and disregard for personal boundaries, one therapist refers him to Dr. Leo Marvin, a self-centered psychiatrist seeking fame through his recently published book Baby Steps. After an encouraging first session with Leo, Bob is quickly dismissed as Leo prepares for a month-long family vacation. Feeling overwhelmed, Bob resorts to contacting Leo through telephone exchanges in an attempt to locate him, even enlisting the help of someone posing as Leo’s sister Lily to bypass the switchboard operator once again.
Leo confronts Bob about his lies and warns him that trust cannot exist between them if he continues to deceive. In an effort to gather more information, Leo adopts the persona of a homicide detective and tricks the switchboard operator into revealing Bob’s whereabouts at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Frustrated by Bob’s actions, Leo suggests that he take a break from his problems. To Leo’s surprise, Bob announces the next day that he will also be spending time at Lake Winnipesaukee as a guest of the Guttmans, who hold a grudge against Leo for buying their dream lakeside home. Despite Leo’s attempts to maintain a professional distance, Bob manages to form a bond with his family. Enjoying life once again, Bob goes sailing with Anna and helps Siggy learn how to dive – something that Leo had been unable to teach her for years.
