What Dreams May Come (1998)
The American fantasy drama film, What Dreams May Come (1998), was directed by Vincent Ward and adapted from Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name. During a vacation in Switzerland, pediatrician Chris Nielsen falls in love with artist Annie Collins. They have two children, Ian and Marie, but their happy life is shattered when the kids die in a car accident. Tragically, Chris himself dies in a car crash four years later. Confused and unaware that he has passed away, Chris remains on Earth and watches as Annie struggles with her grief. Despite being warned not to interfere by a presence, Chris continues to try to communicate with Annie. However, when his efforts prove to cause her even more pain, he ultimately makes the decision to move on.
Chris awakens in his imagined Heaven, surrounded by a beautiful mountain landscape reminiscent of a painting his wife had dreamed of retiring to. Accompanying him are old friend and mentor Albert Lewis from his medical days, and Leona, a stewardess Chris had once admired in the presence of his daughter Marie. As he navigates this afterlife realm, a familiar face catches his eye – it is Leona, now revealed as his beloved daughter. His wife Annie, consumed with guilt for their tragic deaths, eventually succumbs and passes away. Chris initially finds relief in her release from suffering, but soon becomes angry upon learning that those who take their own lives are condemned to Hell – not as a punishment imposed on them, but as a result of their own torment manifesting in nightmare afterlife worlds.
