What Women Want (2000)
What Women Want (2000) is an American romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Nancy Meyers, and featuring the talents of Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Nick Marshall, a Chicago advertising executive, was raised by his mother, a showgirl in Las Vegas. Surrounded by beautiful women who treated him as their cherished mascot, and with rough casino men as his guides, Nick grew up to become a skilled chauvinist who excels at selling products to men and wooing women. When his boss at Sloane Curtis unexpectedly hires top competitor Darcy Maguire to target the female demographic, Nick’s hopes for a promotion are dashed. Meanwhile, Nick’s 15-year-old daughter Alex comes to stay with him while his ex-wife Gigi is away on her honeymoon.
However, Nick’s over-protectiveness embarrasses Alex and causes tension when she introduces him to her older boyfriend Cameron. At the staff meeting, Darcy assigns the team the task of coming up with advertising ideas for her feminine products. Unfortunately, Nick’s attempt at drying his hair in the bathtub leads to him being electrocuted and knocked out. When he wakes up, he realizes that he can now hear women’s thoughts. However, this newfound ability is not initially well-received as Nick learns that most of his female colleagues view him as sleazy. His therapist Dr. Perkins suggests that he use this skill to his advantage and possibly even answer the age-old question: ‘What do women want?’
