In the American comedy film Whatever Works (2009), directed and written by Woody Allen, Boris Yelnikoff is a cynical and misanthropic chess teacher. He used to be a quantum mechanics professor at Columbia University before getting divorced. Boris tends to keep to himself and only has three friends and students he interacts with. He can be condescending towards those who don’t match his intelligence level. Additionally, he frequently sings “Happy Birthday” while washing his hands throughout the film. One night, when Boris returns home, he finds Melody, a simpleminded 21-year-old, at his front door. Despite his initial reluctance, Boris agrees to help her after she shares her story with him. Melody reveals that she comes from a strict Southern upbringing in Mississippi and has run away from her fundamentalist parents.

She asks if she can spend the night at Boris’s place, which he eventually allows. As Melody stays with Boris, she starts developing feelings for him, despite their age difference and different backgrounds and levels of intelligence. Melody quickly secures a job as a dog walker and crosses paths with Perry Singleton, leading to them setting up a date. Upon her return home, she shares with Boris that she did not enjoy Perry’s company due to his excessive attachment to the world. To Boris’ surprise, he realizes his deep feelings for Melody and they eventually tie the knot. About a year later, Marietta, Melody’s mother, tracks down her daughter to explain that she and John were under the impression that Melody had been kidnapped.
