What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), a American coming-of-age drama film directed by Lasse Hallström, follows the story of Gilbert Grape in the small town of Endora, Iowa. He is busy taking care of his autistic younger brother, Arnie, who is turning 18. As the town prepares for the annual Airstreamers’ Club gathering at a nearby recreational area, Gilbert’s days are filled with watching out for tourists’ trailers passing through. Since his father’s suicide seventeen years ago, Gilbert’s mother Bonnie has been consumed by her couch and TV and excessive eating. With her severe obesity making it difficult for her to care for her children alone, Gilbert has taken on the tasks of repairing their old house and looking after Arnie.
Meanwhile, his sisters Amy and Ellen handle the household chores. However, things take a turn when a new FoodLand supermarket opens up, putting Gilbert’s job at Lamson’s Grocery in jeopardy. Becky and her grandmother were stranded in town when their trailer broke down, causing Gilbert to worry about his chances with Becky. In order to enjoy the sunset with her, he leaves his brother Arnie alone in the bath, but ends up coming home late and finding a shivering Arnie the next morning. This only adds to Gilbert’s guilt and his family’s anger, as Arnie develops a fear of water. Despite this, Becky grows fond of both Gilbert and Arnie. However, during one of their conversations, Arnie manages to escape to the water tower he is always trying to climb.
