The film Where Eagles Dare (1968), directed by Brian G. Hutton, follows a thrilling action-adventure as MI6 officers Colonel Turner and Admiral Rolland assign a team of commandos to rescue U.S. Army Brigadier General George Carnaby from the Germans in the winter of 1943-44. The team, led by Major John Smith and including five members of the Special Operations Executive and U.S. Army Ranger Lieutenant Morris Schaffer, must infiltrate a mountaintop fortress in a Bavarian alpine village called Schloß Adler, where Carnaby is being held captive. Disguised as German troops, they plan to parachute in and rescue Carnaby before he can be interrogated by the Germans. In addition to the team’s mission, agent Mary Ellison is also secretly dropped into the area to assist them.

Despite the mysterious deaths of two commandos, Smith remains committed to their operation. He maintains a close alliance with Schaffer and enlists the help of local agent Heidi Schmidt to secure a job for Mary at the castle. In Werfen, the commandos find themselves surrounded by Germans in a tavern and are forced to surrender. Separated from their teammates, Smith and Schaffer, both officers, fight back against their captors, destroy a supply depot, and plan an escape route. They eventually make their way up to the castle via cable car and enter through a rope lowered by Mary. As German General Rosemeyer and Standartenführer Kramer interrogate Carnaby, Smith and Schaffer arrive along with captured double agents posing as German prisoners.
