Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) is based on Delia Owens’ novel of the same name and was directed by Olivia Newman. The screenplay was written by Lucy Alibar, with production by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Set in a North Carolina marsh in 1953, the story follows Kya’s life after her family falls apart. Left alone with their abusive and alcoholic father, Kya eventually finds herself abandoned at just seven years old. She learns to survive by selling mussels at the local general store owned by Mabel and “Jumpin” Madison, who become her closest companions. In the town of Barkley Cove, she is known as the “Marsh Girl.”
Throughout the years, Kya’s older friend Tate Walker has been there for her, lending her books and teaching her valuable skills such as reading, writing, and counting. They both share a deep appreciation for nature and eventually develop romantic feelings for each other. However, when Tate leaves for college and fails to keep his promise of returning on Independence Day, Kya is heartbroken. In 1968, she finds solace in the company of popular local quarterback Chase Andrews who promises to marry her. In a gesture of affection, he gives Kya a small shell which she lovingly turns into a necklace and presents to him. Just as their relationship begins to blossom, Tate unexpectedly returns to Barkley Cove with hopes of rekindling their romance. Conflicted by her feelings for both men, Kya ends things with Chase upon discovering that he is already engaged to another girl.
