Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019)
Where’d You Go, Bernadette (2019) is a comedy-drama movie by director Richard Linklater, based on the 2012 novel of the same name written by Maria Semple. The story follows former architect Bernadette Fox, who now struggles with agoraphobia and lives in a rundown schoolhouse in Seattle with her husband Elgie Branch and their daughter Bee. After her award-winning house was destroyed, Bernadette fell into depression and became isolated. Despite having a close bond with Bee, Bernadette rarely ventures outside and fears interaction with others, including their neighbor Audrey Griffin and the other parents at Bee’s school. When Bee asks for a family trip to Antarctica as a reward for her good grades, her parents reluctantly agree. However, as the trip draws near, Bernadette’s behavior becomes increasingly strange. She considers taking different prescription drugs to cope with her worsening anxiety and insomnia.
Audrey relentlessly begs Bernadette to remove a troublesome blackberry plant from the hillside above her home. Despite Bernadette’s compliance, the hill collapses into Audrey’s yard and house during a rainstorm. According to Elgie, Bernadette was aware that removing the blackberries would cause the hill to crumble. As tensions between them rise, Audrey accuses Bernadette of running over her foot. One day, upon returning home, Bernadette is met by Elgie, his assistant, psychiatrist Dr. Kurtz, and FBI Agent Strang for an intervention. They disclose that Manjula, Bernadette’s “personal assistant” in India who has access to all of her personal and financial information, is actually a front for a notorious Russian criminal syndicate under surveillance by the FBI.
