White Squall (1996)
White Squall (1996) is an American disaster survival film directed by Ridley Scott, based on the sinking of the brigantine Albatross on May 2, 1961, supposedly due to a white squall. The movie follows Dr. Christopher B. Sheldon, known as ‘Skipper’ by the boys on his ill-fated school sailing trip. Skipper is a tough leader who imposes strict discipline on his students. Among them are Chuck Gieg, from a wealthy family, troubled Frank Beaumont, shy Gil Martin, and rebellious Dean Preston. During their first few days at sea, they encounter an incident where Chuck begins choking and becomes entangled in the mast ropes. Gil, who suffers from acrophobia (fear of heights), is unable to climb up and assist Chuck.
Skipper saves Chuck instead and assigns Gil to limited duty for his inability to overcome his fear. Frank’s haughty demeanor causes him to clash with most of the other boys. During one evening in their bunks, Gil confides in Chuck about his difficult home life, which Frank can relate to. Through numerous misadventures both on land and at sea, the boys gradually start to heed the Skipper’s guidance and behave like true shipmates, forming stronger bonds. Eventually, the brigantine docks and the crew is given leave on land. At this time, Frank’s affluent parents surprise him with a visit while they are in port. Frank is dismayed by the unfortunate timing of their arrival as it means he must part ways with his fellow shipmates and join his overbearing parents for a steak dinner.
