Who Am I (2014)
Who Am I (2014) is a German techno-thriller film co-written and directed by Baran bo Odar. Benjamin Engel, a hacker from Berlin, is in an interrogation room, requested specifically by the officer in charge to speak with Hanne Lindberg, Head of the Cyber Division of Europol. He claims to have valuable information on FR13NDS (/frɛndz/), a notorious hacking group connected to the Russian cyber mafia, and MRX, an infamous hacker on Darknet. In exchange for sharing this information, Benjamin asks Hanne to listen to him. Reluctantly, she agrees and takes a seat. Benjamin goes on to describe himself as a superhero with no parents: he never knew his father who left when he was born, and his mother took her own life when he was just 8 years old. Living alone with his sick grandmother, Benjamin views his “superpower” as invisibility due to being socially awkward and overlooked during his childhood.
At the age of 14, he discovered his love for programming and successfully hacked into his first system. Despite feeling like an outcast in real life, he found a sense of belonging in the online world. Spending most of his time on the Darknet, he crossed paths with his hacking role model, MRX, who remains anonymous and has the ability to breach any system. Inspired by MRX, Benjamin aspired to become a skilled hacker himself. However, due to financial constraints preventing him from attending university, he took on a job as a pizza delivery boy. During one of his shifts delivering pizzas to a group of students, he spotted Marie, the girl he had been enamored with since their school days. Upon learning that she was struggling with her exams, Benjamin saw an opportunity to be her hero and decided to help her by breaking into the university’s servers and obtaining exam questions.
