Despite the adults around him trying to reassure him, Josh sets out on a personal quest to find God.
Josh embarks on a metaphorical journey with guidance from both Dave and a devoted nun from the Philadelphia Phillies. Their assistance leads him to sneak into the girls’ school to meet with the cardinal, hoping for spiritual guidance. However, upon seeing the frailness of the elderly man, Josh’s faith is tested. He proposes a trip to Rome during winter break to his family, but they quickly dismiss it as part of his search for God. During his time at the girls’ school, Josh receives help from Hope and develops his first crush on her. They reunite at a birthday party for boys, where Josh opens up about his feelings for her.
