Widows (2018)
Widows (2018), a neo-noir heist thriller directed by Steve McQueen, follows Harry Rawlings and his criminal gang as they steal $2,000,000 from Chicago crime boss Jamal Manning. During their getaway, the van is destroyed in a police standoff. In need of funds for his campaign for alderman of a South Side ward, Jamal threatens Veronica, Harry’s widow. Veronica is given a key to a safety deposit box by Bash, Harry’s loyal chauffeur. Inside is Harry’s notebook with a detailed plan for stealing an additional $5 million from Jamal’s opponent, Jack Mulligan. Despite being advised to sell the notebook to Jamal’s associates, Veronica decides against it. Mulligan’s father warns him that losing to Jamal would bring shame upon their family, and though Mulligan isn’t interested in politics himself, he profits from it nonetheless.
Veronica enlists the help of Alice and Linda, two other widows from Harry’s gang. Alice is facing financial struggles and is being pressured by her mother to enter into a sugar baby arrangement. Meanwhile, Linda’s husband’s gambling problem has caused them to lose their store and face eviction. The fourth widow, Amanda, is unable to join due to having a 4-month-old baby. To prepare for the heist, Alice obtains weapons and a getaway vehicle while Linda deciphers Harry’s blueprints. Jatemme, Jamal’s brother and right-hand man, eliminates potential witnesses and kills Bash in his search for Harry’s notebook. Eventually, with the assistance of her sugar daddy who happens to be a real estate executive, Alice identifies the safe room in the Mulligan family mansion as their target – also conveniently serving as Jack Mulligan’s campaign headquarters.
