Wild (2014) is a 2014 biographical adventure drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Nick Hornby. It is based on Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Despite her lack of experience, in June 1995, Cheryl embarks on a 1,100-mile solo hike along the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. She grapples with painful memories of her mother’s death from cancer and her own struggles with depression, drugs, and promiscuity. After losing her marriage and having an abortion, Cheryl decides to hike the trail in order to rediscover the woman her mother raised her to be. She starts her journey in Southern California’s Mojave Desert but faces an initial setback when she realizes she brought the wrong fuel for her stove and can’t cook any warm meals. Thankfully, she meets a farmer named Frank who kindly provides food and helps her obtain the correct fuel.

As Cheryl continues on the trail, she meets hiker Greg, who offers help in planning the next leg of her journey from Kennedy Meadows. While there, camper Ed assists by helping her reduce the weight of her pack and arrange for new, properly-sized hiking boots to be delivered later on. Throughout her trek, Cheryl’s close friend Aimee sends provisions and she also receives encouraging letters from ex-husband Paul. Following Greg’s advice to avoid deep snow in the Sierra Nevada, Cheryl temporarily departs the PCT and heads to Reno before rejoining it. She decides to extend her hike into Oregon so she can cover the same distance as originally planned, but encounters significant amounts of snow along the way.
