The American film Wild Wild West (1999) takes place in a steampunk version of the American West. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and written by S. S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, Jeffrey Price, and Peter S. Seaman, the film is based on a story by Jim and John Thomas. Set four years after the Civil War, the movie follows U.S. Army Captain James T. ‘Jim’ West and U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon as they search for ex-Confederate General ‘Bloodbath’ McGrath. This mission holds personal significance for West since McGrath was responsible for the death of his parents in a massacre at New Liberty. Their pursuit is at the request of U.S President Ulysses S. Grant who informs them of a plot by McGrath to kidnap America’s top scientists and engage in treasonous activities.

On their train, known as The Wanderer, West and Gordon discover a clue involving scientist Thaddeus Morton’s head which leads them to Dr. Arliss Loveless – a former Confederate officer who is now legless but still an engineering genius. At Loveless’ party, the duo infiltrates his plantation and rescues a woman named Rita Escobar. She seeks their assistance in saving her father, Guillermo Escobar, one of the kidnapped scientists. During the event, Loveless showcases his new weapon, a steam-powered tank prototype, and uses McGrath’s soldiers for target practice. Accusing McGrath of betrayal for giving up at Appomattox Court House, Loveless shoots him and leaves him for dead.
